Navigation for Beginners and Improvers

Navigation for beginners and Improvers is a 2 day workshop using a mix of theory and practical sessions with a strong bias on the practical.  The workshops will take place on location near the hill, we will work out of the Ochil Mountaineering Club Hut or SYHA hostel in Crianlarich.

The weekend will provides ample time for your questions and answers where we will make full use of the map and compass,  learn navigation skills and practice techniques so we can:

  • read a map
  • understand map symbols
  • understand map scales
  • Understand the National Grid co-ordinate system
  • understand contour lines
  • orient your map
  • associate the map with with what's on the ground
  • know your compass and what it's for
  • take bearings on a map
  • take bearings on the ground
  • Understand magnetic declination
  • compensate for magnetic declination
  • follow a bearing
  • give a bearing
  • convert a grid to magnetic bearing
  • check you progress on a route
  • find your position on a map
  • use maps with different scales
  • choose a route
  • stay on a bearing
