Choosing a compass

Silva, Recta and Suunto are good brands, with the Silva Expedition 4 and Recta DT420 being highly recommended, So
consider spending that little extra and get a decent one.

What do we want from our Compass

 1. Clear plastic baseplate: see through to the map and use additional direction of travel lines under the compass as well as the edges.   6. Index line:under or close to the degree markings on Baseplate. Beware some cheaper models do not have index lines making them very inaccurate.
 2. Length of baseplate: - longer is better, easier to
take bearings between points further apart on map
 7.  Bold orienting lines and orienting pointer: for easy alignment of the rotating Housing.
 3. Romers or Scales: scales rulers allows you to read directly the distance on the map in metres. Right Angled Romers do northings and eastings at the same time.  8 Quality

Jeweled Bearings: Compass needle spins freely
 4. Ruled edges: allows you to measure in cm and
often inches as well
 9. Molded lettering: as opposed to printed lettering which quicky wares off.
 5.    Magnifying Glass: useful in poor lighting conditions and with large scale maps to see extra detail.  10. Long Guarantee:
Silva has 3 year guarantee.
